OU names Mewbourne College for generous grad

University of Oklahoma petroleum engineering graduate Curtis Mewbourne pledged $5 million for the university’s energy programs on Friday, and OU named the College of Earth and Energy in his honor.

Mewbourne, of Tyler, Texas, founded Mewbourne Oil Co. in 1965 and continues to operate the company, according to an OU press release. Friday’s gift brings his contributions to OU to $20 million. In 1982, he endowed the first faculty position in the School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering and in the College of Engineering. In 2000, he donated $6 million to the school for faculty posts, scholarships, computer equipment and more, resulting in OU naming the school after him, according to the press release and the school’s spring 2000 newsletter. A year ago, he endowed two new faculty positions in the newly formed College of Earth and Energy, and in November 2006, he pledged to match all donations for endowed undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships for students in petroleum engineering, geological engineering, geology and geophysics through March 2008, the press release said. He also has helped OU structure curriculum and programs to prepare students for the workforce and was the first chairman of the school’s industry advisory board. “No graduate of the university in its entire history has loved it more or been more generous in its support than Curtis Mewbourne,” OU President David Boren said. The Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geology Engineering is regularly ranked in the top five by U.S. News and World Report and has produced executives of Fortune 500 companies.
